How to Bet on Prop Bets

The best mobile betting sites provide hundreds of prop betting options on big NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL games. What exactly is a prop bet and are they worthwhile?

What are Prop Bets?

A prop bet focuses on a particular aspect of a game. This type of wager is not necessarily tied to the outcome of the game.

You are not betting on which team will win or which team will cover the spread. A prop bet – short for proposition bet – has a narrower focus.

Prop bets can be divided into two broad categories: game props and player props.

Game Props Explained

A game prop allows you to wager on whether a particular event will occur during the game. For example, you could bet on the first team to reach 20 points in an NBA game.

Another example would be whether a team will achieve three consecutive scores in an NFL game, or whether there will be an extra innings in a baseball game.

In each of these examples, you can see that the prop bet does not pertain to the result. There are some exotic props around big sporting events, like how long it will take the singer at the Super Bowl to finish the National Anthem, or the color Gatorade that will drench the winning coach.

Player Props Explained

A player prop relates to a specific aspect of a player’s performance within a game. For example, you could bet on whether a QB will throw over 2.5 touchdown passes or under 2.5 touchdown passes in an NFL game.

Another prop bet might be on a baseball player to hit a home run, a soccer player to score the first goal in a game, or a basketball player to score the most points in a game. Once again, player props are not tied to the result of the game.
